I’ve been putzing around with ponds since 2002. It all started with a 20 gallon whiskey barrel pond.

A year later, DH and I added a 120 gallon preform pond next to the patio. I had goldfish, plants and water lilies and loved working around it.
I was satisfied for a couple of years. I even got a round patio pond to add more stuff too.
So in the spring of 2005, I talked DH into digging up the backyard and putting in a real pond. We purchased a DIY pond kit, and DH dug for days. When he thought he was finally done, he mentioned the pond would only be about 700 gallons. He never should have done that. I had my heart set on a larger pond. So being the sweet DH that he is, he started digging again.
DH had dug the pond all one depth, and I had changed my mind again and wanted to add shelving around it. My youngest son and his best friend felt pity on DH and decided to pitch in. They widened the pond and it ended up being about 10′x15′x2′. The liner that came with the pond kit would no longer be big enough, so off we went to get a bigger liner.
Next was placing a collar around the pond edge to keep the sides from collapsing.
Finally we were ready to put the liner in. We started adding water to the pond on Mother’s Day. What a great gift!
I didn’t want to put the fish that I had in the preform pond in the new pond until the water had been conditioned for awhile. I went to PetSmart and bought a bunch of feeder goldfish. Once the dechlorine treatment had taken effect, in went the fish. They were so tiny you could barely see them. Then the plants went in. I bought 2 water lilies, Texas Dawn and Pink Grapefruit, from a professional nursery.
It took most of the summer to get the pond looking right. DH had to move all the dirt to one location. Rocks had to be placed around the edge of the pond. More plants and fish had to be added.
Slowly the pond was taking shape.
