Kaylee’s Visit

January 16, 2009

This past Sunday, my son Travis went down to Savannah to see his wife and daughter. He had not seen them since Christmas and is desperately trying to convince his wife into coming back home and giving their marriage another try. His wife had agreed to come up for a marriage counseling session on Tuesday.

Sunday afternoon, I had a brainstorm. I called her without even talking to my son first. I asked her if she would allow Kaylee to come back with Travis and stay with Richard and me a couple of days and pick her up on Tuesday after seeing the counselor.  It took a while and quite a bit of convincing, but she did agree. This was a first too. She has been so afraid that Travis would not give Kaylee back to her, but we assured her that would not be the case. I asked her to take a leap of faith, and she did. Travis brought Kaylee home. She was even able to sleep in her own bed Sunday night before he brought her over early Monday morning.

Travis brought her over Monday morning around 6:00 am. I woke up to her walking across the bed and saying “Hey Granny.” We talked for a little while, and then we both went back to sleep. Travis even managed to take the day off, and we all spent the day together. We played dress up, colored, played on the playground, played on the computer, played Leapster and read books. And it wasn’t me reading the books. She read them to me. We sat for the longest time together. In fact this was the first time she had ever sat for any length of time with me. I started reading to her and then she took over. I was amazed. Kaylee’s only 5. She was reading sentences all by herself, and knew most of the words herself.  I only had to help her with a few. We read at least 2 books that night.

Tuesday was more of the same. She even made a friend at the playground and they got to play for awhile. We only got to go outside once because the cold front started coming in. Another thing Kaylee loves to do is help out and is such a good helper. She’s very independent. We walked Chelsea, and I let her hold the lease. She was so proud of herself. Hard to believe she’s not a baby anymore. That afternoon we sat and read 4 books, and again I only had to help her with a few words.

Travis came to get her after the counseling session. I almost cried when she left. I hated to see her leave. We had so much fun together.  The time that I was able to spend with her was so precious, and I feel so blessed. I hope to see her again really soon. I thanked Nicole again for allowing her to come.

I really hope that Nicole will let her come up again soon. Hopefully the fear of Kaylee not being returned to her is gone, and she won’t be afraid anymore.
